While SUVs are generally known for being heavyweight gas guzzlers, due in part to their large size and numerous features that pack on the pounds, automakers have been forced to start thinking lighter in order to meet tougher fuel economy standards.
Thankfully, lighter models already exist that offer increased fuel-efficiency without sacrificing performance. According to MSN Autos, who released their list of “10 Lightweight Cars that Redefine Performance,” lighter cars not only offer improved fuel efficiency, but appear to perform just as well, if not better, than their heavyweight cousins.
Leading the midsize crossover segment, the Kia Sorento weighs in at 3,815 pounds and offers an impressive EPA estimated 22 city/32 highway mpg all while providing three-rows of passenger room. Plus, the Sorento’s car-like handling, powerful engine options, and strong brakes create a well-balanced driving experience few midsize SUVs can match.
And while the Sorento may be lightweight, standard technology and safety features are certainly not lacking including a Satellite Radio audio system, Bluetooth, Electronic Stability Control, and Hill Assist Control. The Sorento was even named an IIHS Top Safety Pick.
